Bexleyheath Champion Lawrence Set to Defend Crown

22 Feb

Bexleyheath’s Queensbury British Light Middleweight Champion Dan Lawrence will make the first title defence next month at Epsom racecourse.

Lawrence, 32, will face Margate’s Aaron Lowrey in a mouth-watering clash at the big Night of Champions promotion on March 10.

The Bexleyheath ace will be making his first appearance back in the UK’s premier boxing league since his epic battle with previous 11 stone ruler Marlon Stuart back in September.

That night Lawrence ripped the title away from the champion during a memorable evening.

But he will face a stern test of his championship credentials when he steps back into the same arena to defend his crown for the first time.

Cornering the champion on the night will be former British and Commonwealth super bantamweight champion turned trainer Matt Marsh.

Marsh was the architect behind Lawrence’s triumphant victory last time and the Bexleyheath roofer is confident his trainer will be more than capable of leading him to victory once more on the 10th.

Lawrence said: “Matt Marsh knows exactly what to do to get me into shape to face this guy next month and we have been working in stages to ensure I am in peak condition when I step through those  ropes.

“We’ve been working on lots of new training techniques, some we’ve never tried before.

“But I’ve improved and performed better in my last two fights with Matt, so I’m confident these new ideas will pay off.”

The man looking to dethrone Lawrence will not be intimidated by the champion when the big night arrives.

However, from what footage Lawrence has seen of his future opponent, he believes he’s got what it takes to put on another winning performance.

Lawrence added: “I’ve watched Lowrey’s last fight on DVD and his style is quite similar to mine, which should make for a great fight.

“I always believe pressure makes you perform better and I’m looking to stay focussed and calm when I’m in there and just put on a great show.”

BEXLEYHEATH BOXER WINS TITLE IN EMPHATIC STYLE

20 Sep

As promised, challenger Dan Lawrence has brought the QBL Light Middleweight title home to Bexleyheath after an impressive win over previously undefeated champion Marlon Stuart.

Saturday night saw the Queensbury Boxing League return to the Epsom Downs Racecourse in Surrey for it’s fourth exciting promotion of 2011 and the capacity crowd were treated to one of the most electric evening of boxing ever witnessed inside a Queensbury ring with the thirteen bout card being filmed by Sky’s Premier Sports channel 433.

In the main event the clash that had everyone talking took place when defending champion Marlon Stuart took on mandatory challenger Dan Lawrence for the coveted Queensbury British Light Middleweight belt.

Making the first defence of his crown after winning the belt back in April, Stuart looked in peak condition as he came in just under the championship limit of 11 stone.

Also weighing in just under the limit, challenger Dan Lawrence looked confident as the pair faced off in the pre fight stare down and with opinion divided on the outcome of the impending battle, the atmosphere in the arena was thrilling as both challenger and champion made their ring entrances.

From the opening bell it was Lawrence who pressed the action as he put the champion on the back foot walking him down as he peppered his opponent with shots. Stuart renowned for his devastating power fired back on several occasions catching the challenger with shots that would have put most people down and looked to have Lawrence in trouble after connecting with one heavy shot, but despite his power Stuart was unable to deter the march of the Bexleyheath boxer.

During the opener after one of several heated exchanges Stuart appeared to pull away from the action in some pain as he gestured to his shoulders as if it had been hurt during the action, but referee Seamus Dunne waived the action on and both fighters continued. Over the course of the proceeding rounds the action followed a similar pattern but it was clear to observers at ringside that Lawrence was in command and piling up the points on the judges scorecards. Controlling the centre of the ring and fighting on the front foot constantly, it was the gutsy challenger that was the aggressor throughout.

As the bout entered the final round both men looked to be tiring but again it was Lawrence who was pushing the action and as the final bell rang out the crowd showed their appreciation for both fighters. As the unanimous verdict was delivered, newly crowed champion Dan Lawrence saluted his supporters and capped off a truly memorable evening of boxing.

Lawrence showed appreciation by saying “I couldn’t have done it without the help and support of my travelling fans and the Matt Marsh Promotions team.”

The first champion for Matt Marsh Promotions since setting up in June this year, Promoter Tim Rickson added, “Dan is our first champion and he won in style. We are hoping that this will inspire other boxers to come forward and join our expanding stable”

Marsh Seeking New Semi Pro Boxing Stars

31 Aug

Matt Marsh currently has six semi professional boxers on his books but is looking to add another six by December this year.

Matt Marsh Promotions are a new business, training boxers to compete in local shows. The first of these boxers to make headlines was Dan Lawrence after he stunned crowds with a second round knockout of his loftier opponent Brandan Cookman in June 2011.

Selling over 20 tickets and pocketing over £150 from his debut fight, the Bexleyheath boxer is now challenging for the QBL Light Middleweight Title. The purse for the fight is £120 so if roughly the same amounts of tickets are sold then the prize money will be reaching up to £300. Not bad for a hobby that keeps you fit and healthy!

For some, competing in the ring is just a dream but Matt Marsh Promotions are a firm believer in offering this unique opportunity to anybody regardless of ability or background. All match-making is done meticulously to ensure that fair fights are staged to guarantee safety at all times.

Tim Rickson added “At MMP we do give you the star treatment. I use over 25 different websites to feature new boxers when they join. I always get a text from the new signings saying they feel like a local celebrity!”

DANGEROUS DAN PROMISES TO DELIVER KNOCKOUT PERFORMANCE

15 Aug

Bexleyheath boxer set to expect ‘fireworks’ for the eagerly awaited Queensbury British Light Middleweight title showdown.

Queensbury British Light Middleweight champion Marlon Stuart will put his title and undefeated record on the line when he meets Bexleyheath’s Dan Lawrence in the chief supporting contest at The Reckoning on Saturday September 17th at the Epsom Downs Racecourse.

Originally scheduled to lock horns back in June the proposed encounter was put on ice when the champion Stuart suffered a serious groin injury during his preparations for the contest forcing him to withdraw from the fight, but with Stuart back in training and Lawrence hungry for his title opportunity after his stunning stoppage victory over Bournemouth’s Brendan Cookman the bout looks perfectly poised to produce another memorable clash.

After weeks of intensive training Lawrence promises his fans a thrilling show ‘I had good support last time and hope to reward my fans by bringing the title back to Bexleyheath in September’.

Stuart will be eager to get back into the mix and build on his impressive last performance that saw him claim the title in emphatic fashion, and Lawrence will be looking to cut short Stuart’s reign and walk away as the new undisputed light middleweight ruler. In a bout that promises excitement it’s hard to see this one going the distance as these two destructive punchers go head to head in what promises to be an exhilarating showdown.

Tickets for The Reckoning will be available to purchase from the 30th of July and will be priced at £30, £45 ringside and £55 Gold VIP ringside and can be obtained directly from Matt Marsh Promotions on 07951 456 457.

A Quartet of Boxers Prepare for Epsom Test

14 Jul

A quartet of boxers from south east London will be competing in the Queensbury League at Epsom racecourse in September.

The show will feature a host of championship bouts in what promises to be an exciting evening of boxing on September 17.

Bexleyheath welterweight Dan Lawrence will be stepping up to challenge for the Queensbury light middleweight title against champion Marlon Stuart.

Stuart is undefeated and known for throwing big bombs, which challenger Lawrence will be looking to avoid by using his extensive experience to his advantage.

And the Bexleyheath ace believes the lessons he has learned from training under former professional Matt Marsh at his Welling gym will be a key factor for him.

Lawrence said: “I’ve learnt so much from Matt in three months, I cannot fault him as a trainer. You just grow in knowledge and confidence when he’s training you.”

Joining Lawrence in action at Epsom will be Kidbrooke heavyweight Rikke Askew, super welterweight Kevin Muttett from Bexleyheath and Woolwich cruiserweight James Hodgins.

All four are from the Matt Marsh camp and their trainer is expecting big things from them on the big night.

Marsh said: “All four boys are in great shape and learning with each session.

“I’m confident we can go in there, box well and come out with four wins.

“It will make my night if we do, but these lads will need support from their friends and family so I want as many people to come to the event as possible.”
